Beach Boys
Saw them in Brighton on Wednesday. Only David Marks, Bruce Johnston and Mike love can really lay a claim to bring actual Beach Boys but great night and they played for just under three hours. Don't know how they manage it to be honest at their age! They are playing about 60 dates. Was probably the last chance to see one of the great bands but looking forward to Brian Wilson more at O2 in September. Absolute living legend.

Re: Beach Boys
There's no doubt that Mike Love was a bit of a self loving prick but he was the one along with Al Jardine that kept the Beach Boys together throughout much of the 70s and 80s.

All 3 of the Wilson brothers were smashed on drink or drugs for much of the 70s and all either no showed concerts or turned up in no condition to perform.
In fact all 3 left the group at various periods due to personal problems before coming back.

Look at some of the videos on youtube of the Wilson brothers intoxicated during concerts and doing interviews.

If it was not for Mike Love the group would of stopped in the mid seventies.

Re: Beach Boys
Love got a bunch of the lead vocals probably because he was writing a lot of the lyrics.

Re: Beach Boys
Carl was the best singer, followed by Al Jardine and Brian.

I assume that Mike Love got a lot of lead vocals because a) he is a gobby, aggressive, egomaniacal cunt and b) the others couldn't be spared from the all-important harmonies.

Re: Beach Boys
I have tried and tried and tried to like the Beach Boys but I just don't get it. They do still sound like a surf band. It shouldn't be so hard to like a band that everyone says are amazing!

And I love so many other UK and US psychedelic/experimental 60s bands - Beatles (obviously), Pretty Things, Chocolate Watchband, Zombies... I'd even put the Monkees above the Beach Boys.

Big fan of Brian Wilson , the bloke is an absolute genius. Innovative, creative but ultimately flawed.
Never really understood Mike Loves jealousy towards Brian. His songs elevated the Beach Boys to a status he wouldn't of achieved elsewhere. Weren't they cousins ?

It was for 'Smile' and you can hear it as intended on the 'Smile sessions' boxed album.

Seeing Brian Wilson is like watching Michelangelo paint the Cistene Chapel. As a man he's rather odd but the music is sublime.

It was intended for Smile I think.

The only bad thing about Pet sounds is it doesn't have Good Vibrations on it.

Yes Google "Love and Mercy" stars Paul Dano as young Brian and John Cusack as older Brian. Follows his breakdown through Smile and his relationship with Eugene Landy his psychiatrist who completely took over his life and ended up getting struck off. He had an incredibly sad but fascinating life. Trailer here

Re: Beach Boys
C Wing it's apparently due to the anti psychotic drugs his psychiatrist prescribed him for years. Heartbreaking story which the new film centres on.

Re: Beach Boys
Hairy I was lucky enough to meet him too. He was sitting behind me at a Beatles Tribute show so summoned up the courage to go and chat to him in the break. No idea what I said as was so nervous but he was very gracious and shook my hand. My girlfriend was pissed off as I never let her go and talk to anyone famous as I think it's a bit unfair on the person but all those rules went out the window for Brian Wilson!
